Are you following a technical study, are you interested in the world of industrial acoustics (silencers) and are you eager to work in an international work environment? Do you want to contribute to the development of new technologies and products that play a significant role in the energy transition? An internship at Aarding Thermal Acoustics might be the perfect opportunity for you!
Assignment
Burgess-Manning has a broad range of acoustical components. One of which is the so-called 'Vent Silencer'. A vent is an open pipe which releases gas to atmosphere. Typically, a valve is installed upstream of a vent to control the flow through the vent system. Frequently these valves generate a lot of noise and thus a vent silencer is required at the vent pipe to silence the noise to acceptable levels.
Vent silencers are made of steel and are designed according to design codes. Depending on the application, one of several codes is applicable. Mostly the ASME B31.1 Power Piping code is used for designing and fabricating our silencers. Our product sizer is currently equipped with three design codes (ASME B31.1, ASME B31.8, ASME Sec.VIII div.1). To become more successful and time effective in the European market we need to add additional code calculations to our tool: EN 13480, EN 13445, ASME B31.3. Your assignment is to go through the code and select the relevant set of calculations for assessing the strength of the unit and implement those in the vent silencer sizer (Excel +VBA tool). Starting with one code (EN13480 or EN13445), and if time permits it, work on the others too.
Who are you?
You are student mechanical engineering, internationally minded, ready to graduate after a minor in thermodynamics or applied mechanics. You are proficient in English both in speech and scripture. You are familiar with both MS Word and Excel (knowing how to use VBA is a plus, otherwise a nice opportunity to learn it).
You'll be part of the sales team, in our office in Nunspeet, The Netherlands. We require you to be in the office for a minimun of 3 days a week (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday).
Don't worry about a lack of knowledge on acoustics, as that's typically not part of the mechanical engineering curriculum. We'll teach you the basics and get you going.
What we offer:
Company Background
In 1965 "Aarding" was founded as a steel construction company in Nunspeet, which evolved into various divisions and was split into separate companies later on. Continuing the business of thermal insulation as well as industrial silencers, "Aarding Thermal Acoustics B.V." was established in 2001 and in 2013 bought by CECO Environmental (USA). Since then, CECO has acquired more companies, such as Burgess-Manning, also a silencer manufacturing company. After using a merged company name (Burgess-Aarding), we are now back on the market using the original brand name Burgess-Manning. Also see our company movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a89yxNNrrD4&t=104s
We are a young team of enthusiastic engineers, working on refining the Burgess-Manning equipment, as was done over the last century.
So, do you dare to challenge yourself for an English Internship in the realm of noise? And do you want to learn about VBA or show off your skills, then let us know through a motivational letter. Don't forget to attach your CV. We hope to hear from you soon!
